Fuel Revenues Falling So Washington Has Another Idea

In an effort aimed at replacing falling revenues from fuel taxes, the Washington State Transportation Commission has proposed a new tax scheme… a Road Usage Charge, or a per mile tax on all miles driven by residents of Washington. Some call it a “gas-less tax.” The idea was proposed after fuel revenues are projected to fall by $600 million over the next 28 years, due to increased efficiency of engines and adoption of electric and hybrid vehicles. The state says an alternate source of revenue for the Washington State Department of Transportation is needed to maintain Washington’s roads.
